Introduction to Music Appreciation immerses young children (ages 6-8) in the world of classical music. Students learn to identify specific orchestral instruments and begin to understand that music is a language that tells stories.
Composer Study (18th Century) introduces students (ages 7+) to two composers from the 1700s: Joseph Bologne (also known by his title, Chevalier de Saint George) and Joseph Haydn. For the third term, students are then exposed to a number of ways the 18th century brought about new musical ideas as new instruments were invented and trade began creating awareness of musical traditions around the globe. Lessons are structured so that both older and younger students spend the first ten minutes of the lesson together; older students are then assigned an additional 5-10 minutes of discussion, narration, reading, or other activities to help them deepen their relationship with the music and situate each piece in a musical and historical context.
