Florence M. Haines described herself as an “ordinary Nature-lover.” She never married, lived in Ulverston, England about an hour’s drive from Ambleside, and in 1907 wrote her first article for the Parents’ Review entitled “The Care of Tadpoles.” The February issue of 1909 lists her as the principal of a P.N.E.U school, which started out with Forms I and II girls, added boys a month later, and Form III two years after that. Florence contributed many articles and letters to the editor on various topics from nature study in Israel (then Palestine) in 1912 to a defense of kids having pets. She is best known for her 12 articles published in 1916 describing walks taken in each month of the year. Wadsworth published the articles as a book also in 1916 entitled The Changing Year. Charlotte Mason and Elsie Kitching included the book on the P.U.S. programmes for all to enjoy month by month for as long as the book stayed in print.
We are excited to think of parents, teachers, and students once again enjoying the nature writing of Florence M. Haines as she takes us on what we have republished and entitled A Nature Walk through the Year.
